Celebrating Women: Amelia Earhart
By Sheila E

Unfortunately, fixtures at the end of March and beginning of April were beset by the very wet weather. Courses even had to close. When courses were open, we were obliged to carry our bags to avoid damaging the grass. For the same reason, we were sometimes asked to put ‘hedgehog wheels’ on our trolleys (wheels with spikes). At the time of writing, electric trolleys and buggies have been forbidden for at least four weeks. A lot of our members are not able to carry their bags and a few were put off because they could not hire buggies.

Jany V celebrated her 80th birthday by sponsoring the 3 Clubs and a Putter competition at Brabantse on 31 March. In order to encourage sign-ups, she decided we would only play 9 holes. Then she discovered that the course was closed! However, not to be put off, she decided to go ahead and have a golf quiz and lunch instead. Eleven ladies came to celebrate and stayed for lunch. The winners of the quiz were Carol, Alison, Sybil and Sue. Jany was presented with a lovely bouquet and her birthday well and truly celebrated.

As the wet weather continued and Easter approached, Lynette B, always creative when it comes to party games, hid Easter Bunnies in the Golf website and offered a prize for whoever counted the correct number. It was Alison R who won, with Jill C second. They counted 30 bunnies in total! Their prizes were, of course, a big chocolate bunny for Alison and a mini chocolate bunny for Jill.

The 14 April fixture was the first qualifying competition of the season. However, due to Hole 11 being closed, it had to be non-qualifying. There was a good turnout of 10 players. Veronica stepped in for Ester as sponsor and gave some generous prizes of beauty products. Barbara vO came 1st, followed by Alison R 2nd and Lynette B as 3rd.

One of our new members, Suzanne H, won a prize for being in the most bunkers, a fun prize awarded by Veronica. In spite of the competition being non-qualifying, the sun was out, the blossoms were gorgeous and our ladies came in exhausted but happy to be finally out on the course.

By the end of April, the Golf Course at Ravenstein was beautifully manicured in readiness for two days of inter-Club competitions. The bunkers were professionally raked, fairways cut, greens immaculate. There were some newly planted rhododendrons, plus some violets edging the pathways. The trunks of the fruit trees in the orchard had been newly lime-washed and the blossom on the apple trees were just beginning to open. We even had some sunshine, all of which suited us, though no-one more than Veronica T who was most decidedly today’s winner.

Our next fixture is a new one for 2023. We will play once a month on the 9 hole course Golf Park Tervuren. The weather was looking better on 17th April but we still had to either carry our bags or use a simple non-electric trolley. A lot of our members are happier playing only 9 holes and, although GPT is short, some of the holes and greens are tricky. We play on a Monday afternoon when the Clubhouse is closed so the fixture is listed “with picnic”. We all brought a drink, and Lynette provided a big flask of coffee and several members brought food to share.

We had 14 sign-ups and the Club provided the prizes. The winner in Cat 1 was Carol J with 13 points, and the winner in Cat 2 was Gill B with 15 points.

Recipe
Waterzooi
By Kathy R

Kathy R has kindly shared one of her husband Keith’s tasty recipes. Waterzooi is a creamy and classic Flemish chicken stew.

Ingredients:

500 g Chicken breasts
3 grated carrots
1 sliced leek
Splash of white wine
2 knobs butter
2 tbsp chicken stock powder
1 pinch celery salt
200 ml whipping cream

Method:
1. Chop and trim chicken into index-finger sized pieces.
2. Melt the butter in a wok and add the chicken.
3. Sprinkle over the chicken stock powder and celery salt.
4. Sauté gently until all raw meat is sealed.
5. Add the grated carrot and stir well.
6. Add half the cream and stir well.
7. Add the leek and the rest of the cream.
8. Bring to a slow simmer and cover.
9. Leave to cook gently for 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes.
10. Turn off heat and leave on the hob until ready to serve (soon).
11. Serve with boiled potatoes.
